Among the technological solutions to decompose and convert organic waste material, gasification is a relevant approach for biogas and char production that can be applied on food waste matrices for material and energy recovery. Within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, committed countries aim at cutting in half per capita global food-waste at the retail and consumer level, reducing food losses along production and supply chains (including post-harvest losses) by 2030. Within this context, several technologies are under assessment, depending on the initial biomass to be converted and final product.
The present work aims at carrying out a literature review and preliminary design of a gasification system for food waste process aiming at bio-methane production, assessing (i) previous literature work on the topic, (ii) design, operating conditions and performance of the gasifier, (iii) design, operating conditions and performance of the syngas treatment unit for bio-methane production.
The student will benefit from synergies with LEAP – Laboratorio Energia e Ambiente Piacenza, already active on several projects on the topic.
