LEAP Laboratory is one of the winners of the “Greenhouse Gases Ecomagination Innovation Challenge”, an international challenge promoted by General Electric to speed up the development of technologies able to reduce the environmental impact of the oil extraction process from the Canadian oil sands. LEAP Consortium, with the team composed by prof. Stefano Consonni and the researchers Manuele Gatti, Daniele Di Bona, Emanuele Martelli and Federico Viganò, has been awarded in Calgary (Alberta region, Canada) for the proposal titled: “Opti-Up Heat Pump (Optimized-Upgrading Heat Pump)”. LEAP proposal is to realize a closed-cycle Heat Pump (HP) to recover the big amounts of waste heat produced by the oil sands extraction processes between 80 and 60 °C and to upgrade them to temperatures between 130 and 180 °C, in order to reuse this energy into the same process. Competitors from all over the world took part to the contest with different solutions for the same problem, but at the end only 4 companies have been chosen by the examining board: the LEAP Consortium (Italy), Guha Industries (India), EA Technical Services (UK) and Aster Thermoacoustics (the Netherlands). All the LEAP team has great satisfaction for this important outcome, moreover because an open innovation is crucial for getting new ideas developed, proven and then industrialized and it is the ideal bridge to connect innovators like LEAP, with technology and market leaders like GE.
